Sizing is the part of a kit order that trips clubs up most often. Get it right and every player is happy on day one. Get it wrong and you are chasing swaps for weeks. This guide shows your committee how to measure a squad properly and choose the right sizes with confidence.
The three measurements that matter
You only need a soft tape measure and a minute per player. Take:
- Chest: around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, with the tape level and not pulled tight. This is the most important number for a jersey.
- Height: a quick standing height, which helps place younger players between youth and adult sizes.
- Waist: around the natural waist, useful for shorts and pants.
When a player falls between two sizes, size up. A jersey that is slightly roomy is far more comfortable to play in than one that is too tight.
Youth or adult sizing?
Youth sizes are cut for growing players and tend to be shorter in the body. Adult sizes are longer and offer a more tailored fit. As a rule of thumb, a chest under about 34 inches almost always stays in youth sizing regardless of age, and an adult small runs noticeably longer than a youth XL even where the chest measurements overlap. For younger squads, sizing up slightly means the kit still fits next season.
Run a sizing day (do not self-report)
The single best thing you can do is measure everyone yourself. Set aside ten minutes at training, measure each player’s chest, and write the size against their name in a simple spreadsheet. Letting players or parents guess their own size is where most returns come from. Having a clean size list also speeds up your quote and gets your kit into production faster.
Use fit samples before a big order
For a first order, or any large squad order, ask for a set of fit samples in a range of sizes and let players try them on at training. Trying kit on in person removes almost all sizing problems before the full run is made. It is a small step that saves a lot of hassle later.
The size range we make
Pentathlon produces kit across a full range, from youth YXS up to adult 5XL, and you can mix sizes freely across a single order so every player gets the right fit. Match jerseys, training wear and off-field pieces all come in the same range, so the whole squad is covered.
